Calls for Protecting Kashmir’s Cultural and Religious Heritage
Srinagar, Feb 12 (JKNS): National Conference (NC) MLA Ahsan Pardesi has introduced a private member bill in the Assembly seeking a complete ban on alcohol in Kashmir and other Muslim-majority areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to JKNS, Pardesi emphasized that the bill aims to preserve the cultural and religious values of the region, as alcohol consumption goes against Kashmir’s Sufi-Reshi traditions.
“The unchecked sale of alcohol disregards our religious and social ethos. Our heritage has always stood against intoxicants, and this bill is a step toward upholding those values,” he stated.
Concerns Over Alcohol’s Impact
Pardesi further argued that alcohol contributes to rising crime rates, moral decline, and addiction, particularly among the youth.
“At a time when we are battling a drug crisis, easy availability of alcohol will only worsen the situation,” he added.
The eight-page bill is expected to be discussed in the upcoming Assembly session. Additionally, residents of Lal Chowk have raised concerns over the high concentration of liquor shops in their area, urging authorities to take action.
The proposed bill has sparked discussions, with many awaiting the Assembly’s decision on this significant issue.
