With the launch of train services between Kashmir and New Delhi, all trains heading to or returning from Srinagar will make a mandatory stop at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi (SMVD) Railway Station in Katra, Jammu, for transshipment, according to a media report.
Railway officials have cited security concerns as the primary reason for designating Katra station as the transshipment point.
Key Details of Transshipment at Katra
- Passenger Transition:
- Trains arriving from Srinagar or departing for New Delhi will stop at Platform No. 1 in Katra.
- Passengers will be required to deboard, exit the station, and re-scan their luggage in the departure lounge before boarding another train for the onward journey.
- Train Continuity:
- The train arriving at Katra will not continue further.
- Passengers will need to wait for the next scheduled train to proceed with their journey.
Train Timings Between SMVD Katra and Srinagar
The Northern Railway released the timetable for the new train services, which include one Vande Bharat Express and two Mail Express trains operating daily between SMVD Katra and Srinagar.
Katra to Srinagar:
- Vande Bharat Express: Departs at 8:10 AM, arrives at 11:20 AM
- Mail Express (1): Departs at 9:50 AM, arrives at 1:10 PM
- Mail Express (2): Departs at 3:00 PM, arrives at 6:20 PM
Srinagar to Katra:
- Mail Express (1): Departs at 8:45 AM, arrives at 12:05 PM
- Vande Bharat Express: Departs at 12:45 PM, arrives at 3:55 PM
- Mail Express (2): Departs at 3:05 PM, arrives at 6:30 PM
Inauguration Expected Soon
The official inauguration of the train service is anticipated on January 13, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Srinagar to inaugurate the Z-Morh Tunnel on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway.
The new train connectivity is a significant step toward enhancing accessibility and boosting tourism and economic activities in the region.
