Sarjan Barkati to contest assembly polls from jail, daughter to lead campaign
Barkati’s nomination form has been filed by his daughter, who is expected to spearhead the campaign on behalf of her incarcerated father
Srinagar, Aug 27 (Indian Express): Following the precedent set by jailed politician Er Rashid, whose son Abrar Rashid led his Lok Sabha campaign, Sarjan Barkati, popularly known as “Azadi Chahcha,” is poised to contest the upcoming assembly elections from jail.
Barkati’s nomination form has been submitted by his daughter, who is expected to lead the campaign on behalf of her imprisoned father.
Barkati rose to prominence for leading massive gatherings and rallies during the 2016 unrest in Kashmir, gaining attention for his slogans and speeches.
On August 28 last year, Barkati was arrested on charges of raising funds and allegedly misusing them for radical activities in Kashmir.
