Jammu, Oct 26: Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina emphasized on Saturday that the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory should be viewed as a policy matter, not a political one. Speaking to reporters during a BJP event in Udhampur to commemorate Accession Day, Raina highlighted the need for caution in discussions surrounding statehood, given the region’s tumultuous history with Pakistan-sponsored terrorism over the past 35 years.
The event marked the anniversary of the Instrument of Accession signed by the last Dogra ruler, Maharaja Hari Singh, in 1947, which formalized Jammu and Kashmir’s merger with India. Raina extended his warm wishes to the citizens, urging them to work diligently for national unity and integrity while upholding the tricolor with patriotism.
When asked about the statehood restoration, Raina reiterated the sensitivity of the border region, emphasizing that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have endured significant hardships due to terrorism. He praised the restoration of peace and prosperity in the region over the last decade, attributing this progress to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with the efforts of the army, police, and paramilitary forces.
Raina advocated for a thoughtful approach to addressing sensitive issues, asserting, “Decisions should not be rushed, particularly on crucial matters.” He called for continued dialogue between the UT government and the Centre, warning against any hastiness in this regard.
He also noted the recent fatal attacks in Ganderbal and Gulmarg shortly after the National Conference government was sworn in, suggesting that such acts of violence are aimed at disrupting peace in the region. Raina stated that the ongoing threat from across the border has caused immense suffering in Jammu and Kashmir, which has seen too much bloodshed from terrorism.
In closing, Raina commended the efforts of PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in improving the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, urging the local government to coordinate with the Centre for the welfare of its citizens while avoiding provocative actions or statements.
Meanwhile, the Yuva Rajput Sabha (YRS) and various groups also marked Accession Day, honoring Maharaja Hari Singh and the sacrifices of Dogra warriors led by Brigadier Rajinder Singh. BJP workers paid floral tributes to the Maharaja at party headquarters across Jammu, while YRS held its main function at Tawi Bridge, where they garlanded the statue of the Dogra ruler.
