January 23, Srinagar: The harsh 40-day winter period in Kashmir, known as Chilla-i-Kalan, is set to conclude on a dry note with no significant weather activity predicted until the end of January. Jammu and Kashmir recorded an alarming 81% rainfall deficit during the first three weeks of 2025, according to the Meteorological Department (MeT).
The MeT Director stated that the weather is expected to remain mostly dry and cloudy until January 31. However, there is a chance of isolated light rain and snow on January 23 and between January 29 and 30.
Data reveals that J&K received just 11.4 mm of rainfall as of January 22, compared to the normal precipitation of 60.5 mm for this period. Kathua recorded the highest deficiency at 98%, while Srinagar, the region’s summer capital, saw a deficit of 71%.
Other areas reported equally concerning figures:
- Shopian: 94% deficit (second highest).
- Reasi, Kishtwar, Kulgam, Jammu, and Doda: Over 90% deficit.
- Udhampur, Samba, and Ramban: Above 80% deficit.
- Anantnag and Pulwama: 77% and 75% deficiency, respectively.
- Budgam, Bandipora, and Rajouri: Rainfall deficits of 69%, 63%, and 64%, respectively.
The prolonged dry spell during Chilla-i-Kalan has heightened concerns over water scarcity and agricultural impacts, underlining the need for effective water management in the Union Territory.
