This decision, taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, will enhance access to quality and affordable education for over 82,000 students.

Special Focus on Jammu and Kashmir

Of the 85 new KVs, 13 have been allocated to Jammu and Kashmir, the highest for any state or union territory. Ten of these are in the Jammu division, located in Gool and Ramban (Ramban district), Bani and Ramkote (Kathua district), Reasi and Kakriyal Katra (Reasi district), Mughal Maidan (Kishtwar), Gulpur (Poonch), Vijaypur (Samba), and Panchari (Udhampur).

In the Kashmir division, new KVs have been approved for Drugmulla (Kupwara), Ratnipora, and Galander Chandhara (Pulwama). However, no new Navodaya Vidyalayas have been sanctioned for Jammu and Kashmir.

Financial and Employment Impact

The establishment of these schools, along with the expansion of one existing KV, is projected to cost ₹5,872.08 crore over eight years, starting from the 2025-26 fiscal year. Additionally, this initiative is expected to create 5,388 direct permanent employment opportunities.

History and Role of Kendriya Vidyalayas

Kendriya Vidyalayas were initiated in 1962 to provide uniform and high-quality education for the children of transferable Central Government and Defence employees.

Beginning with 20 Regimental Schools in 1963-64, the network now includes 1,256 operational KVs, including three international branches in Moscow, Kathmandu, and Tehran. These schools serve 13.56 lakh students and are highly sought after for their academic excellence, innovative pedagogy, and modern infrastructure.

Alignment with NEP 2020

Nearly all Kendriya Vidyalayas have been designated as PM SHRI schools under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This reinforces their role as model institutions showcasing NEP implementation.

The demand for admission to KVs has surged in recent years, reflecting their reputation for delivering quality education.

Gratitude Expressed by Union Minister

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for the allocation of KVs in Jammu and Kashmir.

In a post on X, he noted that more than half of the new schools in the region fall under the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency, highlighting the government’s commitment to the region’s development.

This landmark decision underscores the government’s dedication to expanding educational opportunities and ensuring equitable access for students nationwide.
